	The aim of this work is to present an account of a dynamic relationship between society and science. It seemad to us that the current array of arguments intented to persuad society to support science did not take sufficient account of the developments that have taken place, whether in society or in research, wich are discussed both in int the scholary and policy literatures and in the popular press.
